What surcharges are

The base rate covers moving a standard package between two points. Everything else, residential delivery, oversized handling, delivery-area fees, fuel, and seasonal peak charges, is a surcharge or accessorial added on top. They are where carriers recover cost and margin, and where shippers leak money.

The surcharges that matter most

Residential delivery

Applied to nearly every direct-to-consumer shipment. Small per package, but it scales with volume.

Additional handling

Triggered by size, weight, packaging, or shape. Easy to misapply, and worth auditing closely.

Peak and demand

Seasonal surcharges that hit specific services and windows, hardest in Q4 when volume peaks.

Fuel

A percentage surcharge that resets weekly and applies to the base rate plus many accessorials, so it compounds.

How to reduce surcharge cost

• Audit every invoice line for misapplied or duplicate fees.
• Negotiate caps, waivers, and discounts on the accessorials you incur most.
• Model peak and demand exposure before the season starts.
