FedEx Additional Handling and Oversize Update

Effective January 12, 2026, FedEx expanded the assessment criteria for both the Additional Handling Surcharge - Dimension and the Oversize Charge. Additional Handling - Dimension now also applies to packages with cubic volume greater than 10,368 cubic inches. Oversize Charge now also applies to packages with cubic volume greater than 17,280 cubic inches and to packages with actual weight greater than 110 lbs. All previously existing assessment criteria remain in effect unless they were specifically revised as part of these changes as does the 40 lb. minimum billed weight for packages being assessed an Additional Handling-Dimension charge.

Shippers should expect more bulky cartons and dense heavy packages to qualify for surcharges beginning January 12, 2026. Packaging strategy, carton sizing, and dimensional controls will become more important because cubic volume now directly affects eligibility for both Additional Handling and Oversize charges. Packages over 110 lbs. may also be assessed an Oversize Charge even if they are relatively compact. Since existing criteria still remain in place unless explicitly changed, shippers must evaluate shipments against both the longstanding rules and the newly added thresholds, increasing the likelihood of surcharge exposure.
