Calculate your ROI →Shipping zones measure the distance between where a package starts and where it ends. The higher the zone, the more you pay. Understanding zones is the key to lowering cost through where you ship from.
A zone is a band of distance from your origin ZIP to the destination ZIP. Zone 1 is local; zones climb as distance grows. Carriers price each zone differently, so the same package costs more the farther it travels.
Because rate cards are organized by zone and weight, your average zone is one of the biggest levers on your total spend. Shippers with a single coastal warehouse often pay high zones to reach the opposite coast on every order.
Each of these is a network decision with real tradeoffs. Modeling them against your actual destinations shows which one pays off.
The short version: higher zones cost more, and your origin points set your zones. Placement and zone skipping are the levers.
Zones are based on the distance between the origin ZIP and the destination ZIP, grouped into bands (Zone 1 nearby through Zone 8 and beyond). Each carrier publishes zone tables by origin.
Ship from locations closer to your customers, split inventory across regions, or use zone skipping. ShipScience models the cost impact of each against your real destinations.
We model network and zone changes against your real shipments.
